I was wondering insted of giveing her food that I'm not 100 percent sure about what's in it, if I could give her things like tona fish, cooked chicken etc. I no that she also needs to have more excersize, but rite now she can't do much because she's just alittle to big and lazy. smiley
Any help that you all could give would be much appreasheated!

I personally think you should stick with cat food. There are "light" foods for older cats and for younger cats too. Probably the best thing to do is just feed her a smaller amount. It won't kill her if her bowl is empty for a few hours each day. We feed our cat a half cup of dry food in the morning and a quarter cup in the afternoon around 4 o'clock. His bowl is usually completely empty for a few hours between each feeding, and it doesn't kill him to go a bit hungry. We have managed to get him to lose a half pound this year, and for a cat, a half pound a year is probably a healthy weight loss. He was never extremely overweight, but a couple years ago the vet said he needed to lose around a pound or two because he's at the age where he is starting to get less active.
No no no. Never give your cat people food, especially tuna. So many people think that tuna is safe to give to kitty, but it's not. Tuna is high in mercury, and this is very dangerous for kitties.
I agree with post two. Just stick with cat food. There are specific foods for specific problems, so you should talk more with your vet on which option is the best. Also, as already stated, if you need to, cut back on the amount of food you give to your kitty. Also try to get your cat more active. I know that with age they tend to get lazier, but try to get him or her to play a little each day. Every bit counts.
Tracey, absolutely do not give your cat people food. That will make her gain more weight, not lose it. And, losing weight takes time, for animals and people. LOL. So, you may not notice a change in just a couple weeks. I agree with the other suggestions. Just feed her a bit less. There are guidelines on the cat food bag on how much to feed for weight maintenance, or weight loss.
